her length and, of course, lies at a slope, her bowa

canting upwards, She is slightly holed in the forward

part, but, according to the opinion of one of the

engineers, the salving of her will be possible of

accomplishment unless a sudden storm should do further

and vital damage to the vessel as she lies on the reef.

The salvage will mean heavy work, for the cargo,

machinery and iron work of general description will

require a lot of moving.

The owners are to be sympathised with upon their

111-fortune, for the Matsura Maru was on her maiden

voyage. The vessel, which is of 2,900 registered

tonnage, was intended for the Hongkong-Japan run and

'she was on her way out from London. When the disaster

occurred she was only two days from her destination.

After the stranding, the Hitachi was the first boat to

pass the scene of the mishap.

The reef on which the vessel stranded has often

justified its reputation of being a dangerous spot.

There are currents to be contended with and at no

point is the reef visible from the deck of a passing

steamer
